When we are reading for comprehension, the majority of us obviously read at speeds of 200 - 400 words per minute, dependent on natural capability and the complexity level of the text. Now and then, of course, we naturally speed up. When reading an article or book for pleasure and it is not significant to read all words, we mechanically slip into one more type of reading that is called skimming or scanning. When reading our eyes just travel down the page, and stop on the information we are interested at. This is also lazy reading, but comprehension is still quite good for the majority of people – about 75%. A speed reading seminar can teach the majority of people to enlarge their reading speed considerably above and beyond the speed of skimming. The next thing that the majority of people wonder about is how much speed can be increased and this is where it gets puzzling. A number of speed reading programs propose a moderate enlarge in speed – to about 1000 per minute. This seems sensible; what these programs are doing is teaching you to scan more competently. They do this by using a pacer to keep your eyes moving crossways the page, or by teaching you to read using your unimportant vision.
On the other hand, there are other speed reading seminars that go above these claims noticeably. Some claim that they can teach you to read at the really wonderful speed of 10,000 per minute, or even more. Pointless to say, experts are skeptical of these claims, though a lot of proponents of speed reading promise that they are true.
